Traveling Seasonally, meet potter and pyro, Peter Dallas Phillips. A 2015 National Art School Graduate, taught under Sandy Lockwood. With an obsession for Wood firing and material investigation, he continued as Sandy’s studio assistant until 2018. Seven years on as a production potter, he now has his own line of work; embodying a Taoist approach with techniques acquired from a variety wood-firing rituals.

An active kiln builder and wood-firer, Peter is known as a patient and generous teacher specialising in clay, glaze and kiln technologies. His practices are grounded in inclusivity and accessibility, particularly within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Surrendering to the kiln, his pieces bear the story of flame and ash, exuding a serene warmth. He invites us to consider the materiality of these objects and their  journey through flame, as revealed by their richly varied surfaces.

“Phillips believes that his process creates pottery that’s both organic and raw,  full of tectonic tones. Pottery that transcends being a vessel to serve food on or match your kitchen set. These works depict Phillips and the things that he values most.”
